A mini vacation at Don Memo….
When I eat at Don Memo with my family, I get vacation vibes which I love. I am a huge fan of Mexican food and have been known to turn just about anything my mom prepares for dinner into a taco. When she is slicing up a rotisserie chicken, I’m getting out a tortilla and salsa. Slicing up a steak? You guessed it, I already have a tortilla in hand and searching the counter for an avocado to make Guacamole. So, given the chance to go out to eat, Don Memo is always at the top of my list.
Weather permitting Don Memo has both inside and outside seating available. Outside seating is first come first serve so we always try to get there early. Reservations can be made for dinning inside on Open table or by calling
The first thing I noticed about Don Memo is the building. It is in the heart of downtown Westport, set back on the Post Road in the original Town Hall (built 1908). The building is unique as it is covered in cobblestone. The building sits up just high enough to know its somehow historically significant. In front of the building are steps and in front of these is a patio where the outdoor dining is enjoyed. There are large garden pots filled with herbs such a basil, mint, sage and cilantro. The rectangular tables have a minimalist farm to table vibe about them. Servers are uniformly dressed wearing white button-down shirts, jeans and denim aprons.
Don Memo’s menu created by uber talented Executive Chef/ Owner Bill Taibe is “inspired by travels to Oxacana, Mexico City and Puebla.” The menu is filled with unique dishes and drinks. The cocktail list in extensive and I love that they have several non alcoholic drinks to pick from. To start my mini vacation dinner I always order the non alcoholic Avocado Lemon while my parents each enjoy a spicy Margarita. My family starts the meal by sharing the Cabbage salad that has a honey, lime, chili dressing topped with peanuts. We also share an order of guacamole which has hints of basil and mint in it. For dinner I almost always order Chicken Tinga tostadas with black beans, topped with a tomatillo that is just the right size. I manage to get a tiny bit tomatillo with every bite. My parents share the carnitas taco placeros (street vendor tacos) and usually try to save a little bit to enjoy the next day for lunch. A more adventurous eater might enjoy Foie Gras with a coca crème, Morita with chive blossom honey.
The mini vacation is sealed with dessert. I love their chocolate mouse with carmel in a glass cup with peanuts sprinkled on top.
