“A sandwich with a view…”
Six days a week, you can find the Tasty Yolk food truck planted proudly along the waterfront at Southport Beach. But before you see it, you can smell it. The delicious smell of fried eggs in the morning overwhelms your senses, but taking your first bite into a sandwich is a completely different experience.
We ordered two sandwiches today, the Pig and for a healthier option, the Slenderizer.
The Pig is essentially a bacon, egg and cheese, but so much better.
On this particular morning, feeling rather indulgent, I lowered my head as I quietly asked to add the fried potatoes to the already irresistible, and aptly named, Pig sandwich. And what a great decision that was. Biting into it, you taste an egg that is fried to perfection, maximizing yolk-runoff, salty bacon, and the creaminess of the cheese. If that wasn't enough, the pan-fried potatoes added an “over-the-top” element of richness to the sandwich that was pretty unbelievable. Oh, how could I forget the bun? It’s soft and moist with an almost velvety feel.
But, fair warning, Tasty Yolk is not for the the faint of heart! Any sandwich on the menu will likely fill you up for hours to come.
For those looking for a healthier, but just as tasty, option, order the Slenderizer. Folded neatly into a grilled spinach wrap, the sandwich is loaded with flavors that explode in your mouth. The fried egg is just as juicy, and the melted swiss cheese adds a slightly sweet, buttery touch. For me, it was the unexpected seasoning of the sauteed spinach and mushrooms that brought this “healthier” option to the next level. It added that last unexpected punch of flavor as you bit into the wrap, making this sandwich a real winner!
Tasty Yolk was started in 2016 by two Fairfield native childhood friends, Chef Eric Felitto and Mike Bertanza. They’ve been busy in the past few years, now successfully running three food trucks, in Southport, Bridgeport, and Fairfield as well as a storefront location in Bridgeport. If you want to branch out beyond breakfast sandwiches, then go check out the Bridgeport restaurant menu. They have really creative offerings with even more creative names—Beef Bombs, Jungle LoMein, and the Crispy Mother Clucker, to name a few. The website has really great photos of almost every option, so there are no surprises.
Tasty Yolk, we love you.
